How to Calculate a Discount Amount

This guide explains how to work out the amount saved in a discount and how to move from original price to sale price correctly.

Step-by-step method

To calculate a discount amount, multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100.

  1. Write down the original price.
  2. Divide the discount percentage by 100.
  3. Multiply the original price by that decimal.

Formula: discount amount = original price × (discount % ÷ 100)

Worked examples

Example 1: 15% off 120 = 120 × 0.15 = 18 discount.

Example 2: 25% off 200 = 200 × 0.25 = 50 discount.

Example 3: 7.5% off 80 = 80 × 0.075 = 6 discount.

After you know the discount amount

Subtract the discount amount from the original price to get the final price you pay.

Formula: sale price = original price − discount amount
